Maria Bonanni, of Sterling Heights, passed away on May 31, 2026, at the age of 90. She was the devoted and deeply loved wife of the late Marco for 62 wonderful years — a partnership that was the heartbeat of her life and the foundation of everything she built.
She was the beloved mother of Luca (Rosena) Bonanni and Iolanda (Pietro) Verrelli; cherished grandmother of Marco (Sali) Bonanni, Cristina (Shane) Poisson, Marina (Sal) Cangemi, Pietro Verrelli and Michael Verrelli; and dear great-grandmother of Adelina, Michele, Genevieve, Luca, Theo, Rosie and Gianna. She was preceded in death by her sister Orilia D'Onofrio and her parents Giulio and Luigina Angelosante.
Maria's kitchen was never quiet, and that was exactly how she liked it. From the earliest hours of the morning, something was always simmering, baking, or being stirred — not because it was expected of her, but because feeding the people she loved was her most fluent language. No one left her home hungry. That was simply non-negotiable. And if you happened to mention you'd been watching what you ate, Maria would hear you out patiently, nod thoughtfully, and then put more food on your plate. She had a gift for making you feel both completely seen and completely helpless in the face of a second helping. Her cooking wasn't just nourishment — it was the warmest kind of argument that you were loved, and she made it every single day.
Beyond the kitchen, Maria found deep joy in needlepoint, crocheting, and knitting — her hands always creating something for someone else. She generously donated many of her handmade works to her church, quietly leaving her mark on the community the same way she always did: through what she gave, never what she kept.
Above all else, Maria's greatest love was her family. She cherished every moment — every crowded table, every holiday, every ordinary Tuesday that became a memory simply because she was in it. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her endless pride, the living proof that a life poured into others comes back to you a hundredfold.
She leaves behind not just the people who carry her name, but everyone who ever sat at her table and felt, for a few hours, that the world was exactly as it should be.
