Maria (Mary) Iole Storto died in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 2, 2024 in Sterling Heights, Michigan, where she was a resident of Pomeroy Senior Living. In recent years, Mary struggled with the onset and increasing progression of vascular dementia, ultimately succumbing to its complications. She was 88 years old.
Mary was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1935, the second of seven children (first U.S. born) to Italian immigrant parents Ida (Petrella) Storto and Pasquale Storto. Always hard-working and industrious, Mary honed her considerable writing and secretarial skills at the Detroit High School of Commerce, and proudly put them to work throughout her long life.
Mary most enjoyed throwing parties and cooking for family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and lucky strangers. She loved to swim and spent many of her happiest years in a bathing suit, living in Naples, Florida. She never passed up the opportunity to play poker or pinochle. She often gave her time generously as a volunteer, to a multitude of community organizations, PTAs, HOAs, charity kitchens, and the American Red Cross. She took particular pride in her work as an election volunteer in Collier County, Florida.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Pamela Atsoff, grandchildren Matthew Atsoff, Megan (Matt) Carter, Halle Jarvi and Kira Jarvi, siblings Gilda (Tom) Marcin, Nicola (Virginia) Storto, Linda Beaumont and David (Shelley Mogil) Storto; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins in the extended Storto/Petrella families. Mary was preceded in death by her son, William (Laura) Atsoff, brothers Antonio (Patricia) Storto and Pasquale Storto, Jr., as well as her former husband and father to her children, Nicholas Atsoff.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church located at 4571 John R Road, Troy, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross or the World Central Kitchen.
