Mercedes De Jesus Valle, a resident of Warren, Michigan for the past four years and formerly a long-time resident of Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, after a long and fulfilling life. She was 94 years old.
Mercedes was born on April 7, 1932 in Ciudad Arce, La Libertad, El Salvador to her parents, Rufino Valle and Catalina Aquino. She was raised there, completed her schooling, and went on to become a registered nurse, dedicating herself to caring for others while working in a hospital before moving to Los Angeles in 1969.
Mercedes lived life with energy, spirit, and determination. Even in recent years, she remained active and always on the move, whether taking walks around the neighborhood or enjoying one of her greatest passions—dancing. She especially loved salsa dancing and embraced every opportunity to enjoy music and movement.
A talented and creative woman, Mercedes also loved crocheting. She spent countless hours making blankets, sweaters, vests, tablecloths, and bedspreads, many of which became treasured keepsakes lovingly gifted to family members. Her handiwork reflected the care and love she poured into everything she did.
Mercedes had a feisty personality and could certainly be sassy at times, but beneath that spirited nature was a deep and unwavering love for her family. Her grandchildren held a very special place in her heart, and it was important to her to spend time with all of them. Whether visiting family in California or traveling often to Michigan to see her grandchildren there, she cherished every moment shared together.
Her lifelong Catholic faith remained a guiding force throughout her life, providing her with strength, comfort, and devotion through every season.
Mercedes is survived by her children, Nury (Heraldo) Giron, Sandra (Steven) Valle-Holdwick, and Edwin Marin; and by her beloved grandchildren, Andrew, Candice, Katherine, and Katana.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Henry Steven; her parents; and her eight siblings.
Mercedes will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her strength, humor, generosity, faith, and the immense love she shared with those around her.
Mercedes was a devout Catholic and faithful member of the Basilica of Sainte Anne de Détroit. As the Basilica is currently undergoing construction, a blessing of Mercedes’ ashes will instead take place during Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church, 1050 Porter St., Detroit, MI 48226, at 10:30 AM on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
