Michael Alfred James

Born on March 9, 1941, in Miami, Florida, Mike was the beloved son of Oscar William and Cecilia Beatrice (née Zaskiewicz) James. When he was about five years old, his family relocated to Berkley, Michigan, where he was raised and graduated from Berkley High School.

Following high school, Mike proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy. After completing his military service, he began a long and successful career with Cross, later known as Giddings & Lewis, located in Fraser. Through his dedication, strong work ethic, and leadership, he worked his way up to the position of supervisor before retiring in February 2005 after many years of faithful service.

On May 30, 1964, Mike married the love of his life, Judy Paulette Lewis, in Clinton Township, Michigan. Together they built a beautiful life centered around family, and adventure, sharing over 62 years of marriage while raising their family.

Mike was a wonderful and supportive husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He believed life was meant to be enjoyed and was always happiest when he was on the move. Following retirement, he and Judy celebrated by taking a cruise and continued making cherished memories during their many trips to Florida, often traveling by motorhome.

A true lover of the outdoors and the open water, Mike and Judy were active members of the Anchor Bay Power Squadron, enjoying countless boating adventures with fellow members. He was also a proud member of the Eagles and was especially honored to be a charter member of the Eagles in Barton City, Michigan.

An avid outdoorsman, Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, drag racing, riding motorcycles, and dune buggying. As those who knew him often said, if it had a motor, Mike was in it. His adventurous spirit was matched only by his outgoing personality. He enjoyed CB radio and amateur (ham) radio, where he was known by his handle, “Alligator.”

Faith remained an important part of Mike’s life. Raised in the Catholic faith, he later attended Suwannee River Community Church in Live Oak, Florida, while spending part of each year there.

Above all else, Mike treasured the time he spent with his family. Whether traveling, enjoying the outdoors, or simply gathering together, those moments brought him his greatest happiness. His love, guidance, sense of adventure, and warm personality will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Judy James; his son, Gary M. (Tammy) James; his grandchildren, Brandy (Ted) Surgener and Gary A. James; and his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Blake, and Morgan Surgener. He is also survived by his loving brothers, Bill (Ann) James and Jeff James; his sister-in-law, Jan (Gene Anglin) Price and her son, Joe Price; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Cecilia James.

Funeral services for Mike will be private.
