The Sand clan is poorer for the passing of my cousin, Richard, a gentle, good man who made growing up in the abundance of post-war Detroit a journey of adventure and joy.  It pains me to think of his suffering.  Yet I thank God that Richard's smile, in both silly and serious times, is what I remember most.

Richard will be missed.  He had many wonderful qualities.  Our 37 years together hold some good memories.  We are proud parents of three wonderful children and eight beautiful grandchldren.  We did somethings very right.  May he rest in peace.

To all my dear cousins, we are so very sad about Richard's passing. Being one of the "younger" cousins, I somewhat admired him from afar.  I remember Richard as a very handsome, intelligent and sweet man. We sat together at Uncle Johnnie's funeral luncheon and had the nicest conversation, He was there at the Sand weddings and Christmas party, and one of my favorite memories was watching him "rock and roll" with our dear cousin Renee at our cousin Amy's wedding. So many relatives were at that wedding that are gone today!  My heart hurts.

On this day in 1959, we lost our family's matriarch, Grandma Josephine Sand.  It gives me comfort to know that she has greeted Richard upon his new birth into Heaven, embracing him and taking him around to visit with all our family there.  He is experiencing peace, comfort and joy that we cannot begin to imagine.

Our prayers, sympathy and love remain with Richard's dear ones.  May our Heavenly Father bless you all with His everlasting strength and peace.

I will miss my Uncle Richard for his keen intellect and general easy-going way. I still remember him teaching me at my great Aunt Louise's husbands' wake gathering the mathmatical 'casting of nines'. I couldn't remember how to do it now for a million dollars, or even remember what it was exactly applicable to, but Uncle Richard posessed such and instructional gift and ability to relate to young people that he could have been a teacher! I was just thinking of him last week, remembering with fondness how he understood the enjoyment I took out of washing up in the cold Au Sable river on our summer family canoe camping trips.  He understood and actually articulated for me then how it felt to enjoy the elements of the seasons.  He always seemed to keep an eye out for me and genuinely inquired about what was happening in my life. ... He will be missed.

To the family of Richard...We were very happy that Fran & Richard were able to attend our 50 year class reunion in 2008. We all felt like we hadn't missed a beat since 1958 and enjoyed catching up as if graduation had just happened yesterday.  Richard was exceptionally grateful for the opportunity to meet with all our former classmates and did not fail to express it many times before, during and after our event. I will remember with fondness the last conversation we had, which included loving thoughts of his grandson. Sending caring and prayerful thoughts to all of you. Peace.....Grace(Provenzino)Orlando

Richard was a good friend for all of us in our class of 1958. His sister Fran is a very dear friend who many times spoke of her brother with all of us far-flung former classmates. We have many wonderful memories of all the fun times we had. We will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.
