Born in Detroit, Michigan, to Nickolas and Helen Serra, Mom grew up with a strong sense of family that she carried with her throughout her entire life. She was happily married to, James “Ted” Bommarito for 63 years, and together they built a home filled with faith, laughter, music, and unconditional love.
She was the proud and devoted mother of Christine Luby (Pat), Theresa Steffes, Nickolas Bommarito, and Helen Bridges (Dale). But her love didn’t stop there. She was the heart of our family — the steady, nurturing presence that held us all together.
Her grandchildren — Sara Luby (Michael High), James Bridges (Corina), Donald Steffes, Jennifer Luby (Antonio Sapienza-Fiancee), Johnathan Steffes, Alison Luby, Daniel Bridges (Zachary), and Patrick Luby — were her absolute pride and joy. She celebrated every milestone, every birthday, every accomplishment as if it were her own. Being “Grandma” was one of her greatest honors.
Mom was more than a homemaker. She was the safe place. The warm kitchen. The smell of sauce simmering on the stove. The music playing while she danced around the house. She made holidays magical and ordinary Tuesdays feel special. There was always enough food for whoever walked through the door — because no one ever left her house hungry, and no one ever left without feeling loved.
She was a devout Catholic whose faith quietly guided her every day. She lived what she believed — kindness, patience, forgiveness, and generosity. She didn’t just raise her own children; she helped raise countless others. To many, she was simply “everyone’s mom.”
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Nickolas and Helen Serra; her brother, Joseph Serra (the late Serena); and her sisters, Pearl Szalk ( the late Max), and Carol Frontera (Sam). She is survived by her loving siblings: Nickolas Serra (the late Marlene Serra), Sam Serra (Loretta), Daniel Serra (Sharon), Helen Lee (the late Bob Lee) as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
There are no words big enough to describe the space she leaves behind. She was our comfort, our tradition, our strength. The hole in our hearts is immeasurable, but so is the love she gave us — a love that will carry us forward for the rest of our lives.
She will be missed beyond measure and loved forever.
