Shawn Michael Grzyb, a lifelong resident of Sterling Heights, passed away on September 4, 2026, at the age of 50 after an illness. He was born on December 2, 1975, in Rochester, Michigan, to Richard and Gemma Grzyb. Shawn later graduated from Henry Ford High School.
Shawn spent much of his career as a delivery driver, beginning with package delivery and, more recently, making medical deliveries for Corewell Health. Earlier in his working life, he had an opportunity to travel throughout much of the United States, seeing different parts of the country and meeting people along the way. Shawn had a natural ability to connect with others. Whether traveling across the country or simply striking up a conversation with a stranger, he could make a friend almost anywhere he went.
While Shawn worked hard throughout his life, his true passion was always music. A musician since the age of 13, he was a talented drummer who also taught himself to play guitar. He wrote more than 100 great songs and was a member of local bands from his teenage years onward, playing numerous live shows throughout Metro Detroit. On more than one occasion, his proud mother had to accompany him to a venue because he was still under the age of 18. Music was more than a hobby for Shawn—it was a defining part of who he was.
Shawn was a member of Daddy Stitch from 1991 until 1995, when he, Dave Bingham, and Jerry Wolny left to form Grayling. Grayling remained together from 1995 until 2016, with a posthumous release in 2018 following the death of the band’s singer, Jerry Wolny. Over the years, Shawn was also a member of Michael Knight (1998–1999), Beige Eagle Boys (2013–2025), and West Grand (2019–2020), along with numerous other side projects.
Shawn had an incredibly eclectic taste in music and loved discovering and sharing music that others might never have encountered. He was especially passionate about underground bands and took great pleasure in introducing people to new music. Through his love of music and online communities, he formed friendships and meaningful connections with people all over the world, many of whom remained close friends throughout his life.
Shawn was known for his kind heart, sweet nature, and gentle soul. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an easygoing way about him that made people feel comfortable. He also loved discovering new restaurants and trying different foods. When he found something he enjoyed, one of his first thoughts was often about sharing it with the people he loved. He would bring food home for his family so they could experience and enjoy it with him. That spirit of sharing extended to everything he loved—whether it was a song, a meal, a discovery, or simply a story. Shawn found joy in sharing the things that made him happy with those closest to him.
He will be remembered for his generosity, thoughtfulness, humor, love of music, and the genuine connections he made with people throughout his life.
