You became my Dad in 1978. You always called me daughter and told everyone I was your daughter. I could always go to you whenever I needed to talk or get advice.You never let me down. Your counsel was always right. Dad, you were always so humble. You never boasted about all of the ways you served your God, your Church, your family, and your country.Nothing was too menial or too low for you to do to help someone. You served the Lord for almost 50 years as an ordained deacon. You were a deacon in every sense of the word. No one could have asked for a better Dad or Granddad. Luke, your great grandson still cries every day for you. But I know you already know that.He loved you so much. You were so good with him, so much fun.You played with him down on the floor until a year ago, because you had trouble breathing.Saturday mornings are very sad over here, because we got to have you with us every weekend and holidays. You never missed a birthday, a holiday, or going to dinners with all of us whenever we called you. You were always there for us.
You always put yourself last, ever since I knew you. You are the only person I ever knew that did not have anyone who didn't like them. Everyone loved you.Everyone respected you. I don't think you knew how much you meant to everyone who knew you, especially, your friends and neighbors at The American House.They all told us you were the "Mayor". You were their leader. You encouraged them. You always said things to let the staff know how much you appreciated them.You served your country, but you didn't like to talk about it. You were in a war. When the American House asked all of the vets to give them pictures of their time in service, everyone was in dress uniforms with medals and ribbons. You gave them a picture of you in your battle fatigues in Korea in front of armoured vehicles. That was typical of you.Vern misses you very much. Daryl is still having trouble believing you are gone, and I am still getting up on Saturday mornings waiting for you to come in the back door shouting "hello" to everyone.Someday the sad hole in our hearts will be replaced with smiles, but it is going to take a while. Dad, I never knew anyone like you in my whole life. I am sure I never will again.I am so happy God lent you to me. I will always be grateful.You taught me so much. I am still trying to be a better person, because of you.I am crying while I write this. I have been doing that alot, but I only do it alone for the sake of everyone else. There are no words that can fill the emptiness in your heart, but perhaps it will hlep to know others care.Ernie was a wonderful man, and he will be missed by all of us living here.I have lost a friend to whom I could talk.About 3 weeks before he died, Ernie and I were talking about his health to the extent that he was losing his breath, and could hardly sing any more. It was getting harder for him to walk. He told me he prayed everyday that when it was his time to go, that the Lord would take him fast. He did not want to be a burden on anyone.He  didn't want to move in with Daryl and Wanda, because Daryl had enough on his plate.
