Barbara A. Garrett, was born “Aiko Mayuzumi” on February 12, 1926 in a small prefecture just outside of Tokyo, Japan. She was one of six children and the only girl. Barbara was an excellent student and upon completion of high school, Barbara went on to graduate from a prestigious all girl’s college in Tokyo. Like most Japanese women in her generation, she worked to support her country during the war.
After the war, Barbara returned to working in her parent’s store in Tokyo. She soon met her American husband who was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Barbara returned with her new husband to the United States in 1958 to begin a new chapter in her life. In September of 1960 she had her first son Leonard and joyously to follow was Gregory born in May of 1963.
Following her divorce after 22 years of marriage, Barbara began working to support her two sons. Barbara was a tireless worker, sometimes working 2 jobs just to support her sons. Greg and Leonard are fond of saying “we were raised on tip money” in honor of how hard their mother worked to maintain their home and livelihood.
Barbara was a devoted wife and mother and friend to so many. And after 30 years of working and successfully raising her two sons, Barbara completely paid off her home mortgage and Barbara choose to retire at the age of 70.
Barbara was fortunate to be able to live out her retirement years in her home until her peaceful passing on March 24th, 2018, with her two sons by her side. Barbara left the earth in her sleep knowing that in her last days, her two sons were caring for her in the home where they were raised and where she called home for over 50 years. Barbara Ann Garrett, (Aiko Mayuzumi), will be loved and cherished by her sons and family and all who knew her for all time.
A visitation for Barbara will be held Friday, March 23, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Boice Funeral Home, 308 Pollasky Ave, Clovis, California 93612.
