Carlos was born on May 11, 1943, in Fresno, California, the son of Carlos R. Banuelos. While his family spent a few years in Los Banos and Southern California during his early childhood, they eventually returned to Fresno, where Carlos grew up. After his parents divorced while he was still very young, his father remarried Rosie Hernandez, who raised him as her own.
He attended Sequoia Junior High School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1962. During his school years, he excelled in both boxing and track. Following graduation, Carlos enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, serving honorably and attaining the rank of Sergeant before his retirement and honorable discharge.
In 1965, Carlos married his high school girlfriend, Mary Leas. Together they welcomed two sons, Carlos Joaquin Banuelos and Nathaniel Leas Banuelos. Carlos was a devoted and supportive father who took great pride in his family.
While attending Roosevelt High School, Carlos discovered a passion for woodworking that would shape the course of his life. He pursued a career in cabinetry, eventually becoming a union journeyman cabinetmaker. Over the years, he earned a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, dedication, and attention to detail. Much of his professional career was spent working as a union cabinetmaker, and while employed by Inland Showcase he supervised projects of every size and complexity, including the cabinetry and millwork for Fresno City Hall.
Although woodworking was his specialty, Carlos developed expertise in many trades throughout his career. He became highly skilled in electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and drywall, and he generously shared his knowledge and talents with family and friends whenever help was needed. Whether building, repairing, or creating something new, Carlos approached every task with pride, precision, and care.
Carlos is survived by his wife, Cynthia Louise Hocker Banuelos, whom he married in 1993, his sons, Joaquin and Nathaniel Banuelos; his stepson, Brad Beckham; his brothers, Richard Banuelos and George Quezada, as well as five grandchildren: CJ, Olivia, Greyson, Zoe and Quinn. He is predeceased by his parents, Carlos and Rosie Banuelos and sister, Mary Lou Espinosa.
In keeping with Carlos's wishes, no formal service will be held. His family invites those who knew and loved him to honor his memory by sharing a favorite story, a cherished memory, or a kind word.
