Gladys Kartchner Mach (95) passed away in her home surrounded by family on August 16, 2021. Gladys was born on May 1, 1926, in Chandler, Arizona, to Henry Culver Kartchner and Bertha Nations Kartchner. She was the fourth of eight children.
She grew up on a forty-acre dairy farm north of Chandler. Her job was to help her mother in the house with the housework and cooking. Because of this, she became an excellent cook and housekeeper at a young age. In high school, Gladys took typing and shorthand and was proficient in both. After graduating from high school, she moved to Tucson, Arizona, and lived with her older sister Florence to attend Business College and help Florence care for her daughter, Barbara. She also worked as a secretary/typist at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base outside of Tucson. While working at the base, Gladys met and married young Army Air Corps officer Leland E. Mach from Yankton, South Dakota.
After World War II, Gladys worked various jobs to help Leland finish his education. But the roles that she enjoyed most were housewife, mother, and grandmother. She was famous for her delicious pies, potato salad, clam dip, homemade ice cream and pomegranate jelly. Gladys was member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by husband Leland, her parents and 6 of her siblings. Gladys is survived by son Philip; son Vincent and his wife Debra and their children Meredith (Rulon) and Beau; daughter Connie and her husband James Hubbard and their children Clint (Ariel), Jesse (Chelsea), Jamie (Brett), Jared (Stephanie), Jennifer (Lee) and their twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren; brother Ernest and his wife Linda.
