Gregg H. Schmidt, 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Clovis. Born on April 2, 1946, in Chicago, Gregg lived a full and adventurous life defined by hard work, loyalty, humor, and love for his family and friends.
Gregg proudly served in the Air National Guard and built a remarkable career that reflected both his talent and passion for aviation. Over the years, he owned a logging business, worked as a smokejumper pilot, served as an aircraft mechanic for several aviation shops, shared ownership in his own aircraft repair business, and later retired from the FAA. He was the kind of man who could fix almost anything and was happiest when working with his hands, solving problems, or spending time around airplanes and engines.
Outside of work, Gregg loved riding and working on motorcycles, flying and being around airplanes, target shooting, running, and spending time at the coast. He carried a thick layer of sarcasm that those who knew him came to love and expect. Beneath that tough humor was a deeply caring man who valued friendship, loyalty, and family above all else. He also wore his tattoos proudly, each one carrying its own story and piece of his life.
Gregg is survived by his loving wife, Grace; his sons, Steve Schmidt (Patty) and Fred Schmidt (Anna) ; and his cherished grandchildren, Devin, Carson, Brady, and Keeley. His sister-in-law Nancy; and their children, Jennifer and Brian. He was preceded in death by his brother Mark.
To say Gregg will be missed feels like an understatement. His presence was larger than life, and the memories, lessons, laughter, and stories he leaves behind will stay with those who loved him forever. He was a good man, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
A celebration of Gregg’s life will be held at the Schmidt Residence on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
