James "Jim" Michael Burkhart, a resident of Clovis, California, passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on May 2, 1945, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jim led a life full of humor, hard work, and dedication.
Jim attended Southwest High School in Minneapolis, during which time he worked at Baskin-Robbins when a single scoop cost just 13 cents. Upon graduation from Southwest, he went on to attend Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he earned a degree in economics. In 1972, he was offered a position at S&J Ranch in Madera, California, prompting a move with his wife, Nancy, to the West Coast. This opportunity marked the beginning of a loyal 40-year career at S&J Ranch.
Jim's personal life was marked by his marriage to Nancy Johnson, whom he met through her brother, Bill. The couple married in Minneapolis on August 10, 1968, and together they built a life filled with love and laughter. In 1974, Jim and Nancy welcomed their daughter, Susan.
A man of varied interests, Jim had a passion for numbers, accounting, economics, and finances. He had a soft spot for dogs and he and Nancy welcomed many stray animals into their home over the years. Known for always having a cup of coffee in hand, Jim was an avid bowler in leagues across Minneapolis and Fresno, an enthusiastic reader, and a lover of traditional New Orleans jazz music. He excelled in card and board games, and, more often than not, emerged victorious. A dedicated sports fan, Jim tirelessly supported all of Minnesota’s professional sports teams and was a devoted fan of Fresno State's collegiate teams.
Jim is remembered for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to family and friends. He leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy Burkhart; his daughter, Susan Wise (Troy); his grandson, Nolan Sawyer; his step-grandson, Trevor Wise; and his sisters-in-law, Joan Burkhart, Julie Novotny (Steve), Anne Johnson, and Juliette Primeau. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews and 17 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Waldo & Ruth (Hauser) Burkhart; his sister, Nancy Newman; his brother, Bill Burkhart; his parents-in-law, Burton & Lois Johnson; and his brothers-in-law, Bill Johnson and Craig Johnson.
Jim's humor, hard work, and love for his family will be his legacy. Never wanting the spotlight, Jim asked that no services be held upon his passing.
