One of Richard’s great joys was teaching French to anyone from small children to older adults. He served a three-year mission in France for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which helped spark his lifelong love for the language. He was a dedicated scholar, attending four schools after high school: Deep Springs College, the University of Utah (B.A.), the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (M.A.), and Ohio University (Ph.D. in Foreign Language Education).
His example inspired his children and grandchildren, who have attended at least ten different universities. Another of his great passions was music. He was a gifted pianist, played the organ, led choirs, and sang in many of them. Additionally, as a young adult, he played the saxophone and the clarinet.
