Born November 15, 1948, in Freeport, Texas, to Baxter Ceseral Copeland Jr. and Norma Jean Merrill Copeland, Gary spent his childhood fishing, diving off bridges, working on cars, and proudly living the life of a "River Rat."
A dedicated and hardworking man, Gary worked for family-owned service stations, Dunn Equipment, Parkem Industrial Services, and Chevron Phillips, where he retired after over 27 years as a boilermaker. He also pursued numerous entrepreneurial ventures, including tree service, sandblasting and painting, welding, manufacturing, and a wrecker service. Retirement never quite suited him, and he later spent five years with the City of Sweeny's maintenance department. A largely self-taught carpenter and metal fabricator, Gary frequently used his talents to help others.
Gary was known for his sharp wit, generous spirit, and love of storytelling. Facebook became his stage, where friends eagerly followed his tales, especially those involving his fictional sweetheart, Ima Jean.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Kelli Copeland, Wesley Copeland (Tony), Joni Verzwyvelt (JD), and Traci Copeland; sisters Laura Wilson (Bud) and Nancy Copeland; five grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and other beloved family members.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the friends, neighbors, and caregivers who helped Gary maintain his independence and supported him during his final months. Special thanks go to Neal Bess Jr., Sara Grovey, Kurt & Melissa Karst, Mickey Lovell, Darrin Mayberry, and David & Sherry Peek. We appreciate the professional care he received from Avir at Bay City and Angels Care Hospice.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date through Gary's Facebook profile.
