Genoveva "Gennie" Rangel Cortez

After graduating from Brazosport High School, Gennie worked for The Brazosport Facts from its original location in Freeport, TX. She married Carlos P. Cortez in 1970 and was a beloved mother to 4 children. Gennie would go on to earn her Associate of Arts Degree from Brazosport College. Mom worked in many school districts. At Brazoswood High School, Gennie was loved by “her” students and faculty, many who became her lifelong friends. Later in life, Gennie worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Mom cherished spending time with all her family and friends, especially family gatherings and reunions. She also enjoyed visiting garage sales, working in her yard, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandsons. She was affectionately known as “Momo” by many in the family. Mom was always there for us no matter what and we will always remember.

Gennie was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband Carlos P. Cortez, her sister-in-law Juanita Rangel, and her son Chris Cortez.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her children; Carlos Cortez (Sandra), Cathy Milbrandt (James), and Cindy Cortez. Her siblings; Herminio (Carmen), Julie Garza (Art), Paula Guerra (Raul), and Louis Rangel. Her granddaughters; Lauren Hathcock Crottie (Kevin) and Bella Cortez. Her great-grandsons; Kevin John Crottie III and Jaxon Beaux Crottie.

Visitation will be from 5-8 pm on Tuesday June 23rd, 2026, at Restwood Funeral Home. The Rosary will begin at 6:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday June 24th at 10 am at St. Josephs on the Brazos with Father Tin Phan. Burial will follow the service at Restwood Memorial Park.
