Leroy attended West Columbia High School. He served as a PFC in the Signal Corps of the US Army, and after being honorably discharged, came home and was employed at OCD as a Pipefitter. During that time, he also coached a women’s slow-pitch softball team for over 20 years. After retiring from OCD, Leroy took a job working for the Boys Scouts, where he lived on the grounds of Camp Strake in Conroe, Texas. After leaving the Boy Scouts, he and his wife Martha came back home to Clute and he worked at Hampton Inn in Clute. Leroy was a kind and loving man. He had an infectious smile and was well known for handing out gum to anyone and everyone he met. He made homemade wooden toys and furniture in his woodshop in the backyard and gave these things to his family or donated them to fundraisers or special causes.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and was twice widowed.
Leroy leaves behind (his “gal”) his loving wife of 22 years, Martha Danford, two sisters, three sons; Travis and Kim Danford of Clute; Richard Danford of Clute, and Gerald and Corinne Danford of Tennessee. He also leaves behind three step-children, Mickey and Monta Cothron of Angleton, Texas; Tom and Martha Cothron of Richwood, and Ruth Patrick of Clute; 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
A family memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Leroy’s name to the American Heart Association or IPH Hospice of Lake Jackson.
