

Odis James “O. J.” Mayes, formerly of Lake Jackson, was born September 11, 1922 in Wallis, Texas to Lucy and Tom Mayes and died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in Baytown, Texas at the age of 90. O. J. was a resident of Lake Jackson since 1945. He married Victoria N. “Vickie” Kolojaco in Mexico on September 11, 1942 and they enjoyed 56 years together, until her passing in 1998. He enjoyed fishing and ran charter boats, gardening, cooking BBQ ribs and taking care of the grandchildren. He loved dancing and watching baseball. He spent time working in his shop, where he could fix most anything. He was a member of the VFW as he was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II and was involved in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and received numerous decorations and awards for his service. He was a member of the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Lake Jackson. Besides his wife, Vickie, O. J. is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Earl and sisters, Edna, Maudie and Ruby. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Kirk and her husband Paul; granddaughters, Amy Laney and her husband Philip; Tiffany Cloudt and her husband Andrew and great granddaughter, Cayla.
