Patricia Cummings

October 27, 1928March 19, 2014

Beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to all, Patricia Williamson Johnson Cummings passed peacefully from this earth Wednesday, March 19th surrounded by her immediate family. Pat was born October 27, 1928 in Teague Texas. As the daughter of a professional Boy Scout executive, she spent her childhood years growing up in Sweetwater, El Paso, and Corpus Christi, Texas, graduating from Corpus Christi High School in 1945. She continued her education graduating with honors from The University of Texas in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. Upon graduation, Pat was accepted to medical school at The University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, but chose not to attend because in those days it was not the norm for a female physician to marry, have children and practice medicine. While working as a Research Assistant at the medical school she met her first husband, Dr. Oscar L Johnson, and they married June 23, 1950. As a young married couple, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson lived in Cincinnati, Ohio during his medical internship, moving back to Galveston for his Pediatric Residency. In 1953, Dr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Lake Jackson Texas to open practice as the Brazosport areas’ first pediatrician. Pat loved being the wife of a doctor and raising her family. She built her life around her children, her faith, her community, and her friends. Following the death of her husband Oscar, Pat lived alone fourteen years until she was blessed to marry her best friend Jim Cummings in 1999. Jim and Pat enjoyed a happy, healthy and leisurely life together. Her parents, Aline and Coke Williamson of Corpus Christi, Texas and her first husband, Dr. Oscar L. Johnson, preceded Pat in death. She is survived by her husband, Jim Cummings of Lake Jackson, Texas; Kent Johnson of Charleston, South Carolina, wife Karis and their sons Addison and Connor; Coke Johnson of San Antonio, Texas, wife Diana and their son Jake and daughter Jennabeth; and Kevin Johnson of Lake Jackson Texas, wife Cheryl and their son Kane. Pat is also survived by her extended family through Jim Cummings of Scott, Kevin, and David Cummings and their extended families. Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday March 24th 2014 at Cornerstone Church, 3007 Highway 332 in Lake Jackson with a reception immediately following at First United Methodist Church, 404 Azalea in Lake Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The PEO Foundation, Pat Johnson Cummings Fund, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50312, or First United Methodist Church, 404 Azalea, Lake Jackson, Texas 77566.

Kent, I've often told people of your mom's class and grace when you showed up with me in tow after we had been out building the bonfire. I wish that I had known her more while growing up. We will all miss her. Henry
