

Samuel Vernon Carleton, of Angleton, Texas passed away peacefully on the evening of December 10, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born on January 29, 1933 to Harvey and Oneta Carleton in Gonzales, Texas. After graduating from Gonzales High School in 1951, Sammy went to work for DOW Chemical in Freeport, Texas. A year later, DOW went on strike and Sammy joined the U.S. Navy in 1952. While in the Navy, he acquired his love of travel. He was fortunate to have journeyed to the Antarctic on an expedition with Admiral Richard E. Byrd.
While in high school, Sammy met his future wife, Patricia Ann Beck of Waelder whom he married on June 18, 1954. For a while they lived in Lake Hurst, New Jersey before Sammy was discharged from the Navy in 1956. Upon discharge, Sammy and Patricia moved to Lake Jackson, Texas where he returned to work for DOW until his retirement in 1994. In 1961 they moved to Angleton, Texas for the remainder of his life. They raised their four children together while he was working for DOW.
Upon moving to Angleton, Sammy and Patricia became members of the First Baptist Church where he was a leader of the Adult Sunday School Class. He was also one of the founding members of the Angleton Lions Club where he served in various capacities for many years. Sammy loved all sports, but especially football and baseball. He was a Little League baseball coach for his son’s teams, and was an avid Angleton Wildcat football fan for over 50 years. Sammy’s other hobbies included a good game of dominoes, deer and dove hunting, summers at their cabin in Colorado, RVing, traveling, and storytelling. During his 87 years he traveled to 49 states, only missing Wyoming.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Patricia; his younger brothers William and Dale; his children, Pam and Terry Roberts, Kenneth and Laurie Carleton, Gayelyn and Danny Daniels, Kevin and Lisa Carleton; grandchildren Brandon Cryer, Kyle and Jessica Roberts, Courtney and Chris Craig, Lindsey Hedrick, and Austin Carleton; his pride and joy were his great-grandchildren; Gavin and Cooper Craig, Brynlee, Aida, Ethan and Logan Roberts, and Everly Hedrick. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Evelyn, and granddaughter Hailey Huddle.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Angleton on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 with visitation from 12:30-2:00 PM. The service will begin at 2:00 PM with burial immediately following at Restwood Memorial Park in Clute, Texas.
