

David graduated from Mission Viejo High School in 1973 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1974 to 1980 as an air traffic controller at NAS Jacksonville & achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. Following his military service, he worked for the FAA as an air traffic controller from 1980 to 1981 before attending pilot school. He then embarked on a long and accomplished career as an airline captain for ComAir from 1984 until his retirement in 2011.
On September 14, 1986, while piloting a Metro III aircraft, Captain David Engebretsen Sr. encountered a critical control malfunction. With remarkable skill and composure under pressure, he safely executed a high-speed landing, ensuring the well-being of everyone on board.
David had a lifelong passion for golf, spending countless hours perfecting his game and sharing his love for the sport with others. His dedication led him to serve as the Golf Pro at Eastwood Golf Course in Orlando, Florida, where he mentored players of all skill levels and fostered a welcoming community on the greens.
David is survived by his three children, David Engebretsen Jr., Ena Engebretsen Warrington, and Sean Engebretsen; his two grandchildren, Eden Michielle Engebretsen and Helana Troi Engebretsen; his sisters, Ursula Roll, Zina Engebretsen, Laurie Carpenter, and Edith Mackay; and his brothers, Robert Saxe, Mark Engebretsen, and Kjell Engebretsen.
A memorial service will be held on March 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home & Park, followed by an honorary burial at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.
