Proud of being named after his uncle who served in World War II, Elmer, known as “Lou”, was a wonderful example of faithful, joyful love. Lou loved the Lord his God with all his heart, loved his extensive family deeply, loved his church family, and truly cared for the many friends and co-workers gained over the years. He also held a special place in his heart for his beloved dachshund, Bandit.
Born in Brookneal, Virginia, Lou was the baby of the family with four older sisters. His younger years were spent working on his grandfather’s farm picking tobacco. He joined the Army at the age of 17. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam war and received the Bronze Star for his service to his Country. He was very mechanically inclined and was considered a “jack of all trades”. Following his 20-year military career Lou moved to Florida, Colorado, then back to Florida where he worked in various industries before beginning a career with Lockheed Space Operations during the Space Shuttle program. In retirement, Lou enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies including fishing, hunting, and wood carving. He was always moving--working at the church, building something or fixing something.
During his 86 years, Lou was met with the joys of marriage, children, and successful careers. He also endured the challenges of war-time service, hard work, illness, family deaths and other heartbreaks. Throughout it all, his steadfast faith, strong sense of family, and work ethic was an example that has been recognized by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Newman A. & Bernice W. Pollard, three sisters, Virginia Rehovich, Ann Apperson, and Betty Ginther along with his wife Karla Pollard (1974) and Wanda Pollard (1996) and grandson Paul Mackey (2007). Lou is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Sharp Pollard, sister Peggy Hamlett, sons and daughters Raimund Pollard, Dawn Pollard Mackey, Shannon Pollard DeAraujo, Larry Brendle and Launa Brendle Young, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
