Erma Eileen Herman
April 11, 1921 – November 2, 2018
Friends and family are mourning the loss of much-beloved Titusville piano teacher Erma "Eileen" Herman, who devoted her life to her family and to playing and teaching music. Eileen, who died peacefully on November 2, 2018 at the age of 97, was a longtime resident and private piano teacher in Brevard County.
She was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, of immigrant parents, Egnat and Rozalia Bondar. After high school, she attended the Detroit Conservatory of Music, becoming an accomplished concert pianist. She then returned home to Canada to teach and play piano and organ at local churches and venues.
Eileen married Charles Herman of Jamaica, Long Island, New York, on Christmas Day of 1943 and moved to New York City. Eventually, they moved to Titusville, Florida, with their two children.
She had fond memories of working at the Kennedy Space Center for McDonnell Douglass on the Saturn 5 and Apollo-Soyez Program, as well as working at the MDAC TI-CO Plant until she retired in 1988. Eileen was the proud aunt of the first female Canadian Astronaut (Roberta Bondar) who flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1992.
After retirement, Eileen enjoyed and had a passion for gardening around her home and also volunteered her musical talents at various churches, nursing homes and senior centers.
Eileen is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Herman, parents, Egnat and Rozalia Bondar, and three older brothers, Voyd Bondar, Michael Bondar and Edward Bondar. She is survived by her daughter, Melody Eileen Murray (Steve), son, Greg John Herman (Bonnie), brother, Arthur Bondar (Aldona), along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several Canadian relatives.
At her request, a memorial service will not be scheduled. The family would like to thank all of the staff and caregivers at Brookdale Senior Living and Hospice of St. Francis who provided support and encouragement during her final days. In lieu of flowers, any donations to Hospice of St. Francis are greatly appreciated.
