March 10, 1960 – April 14, 2025
"Life is about the journey"—and Tony Jones embraced every mile of his path with joy, love, and purpose. Born on March 10, 1960, in Forest Park, Georgia, Tony was known from a young age as an athlete, class clown, and free spirit with a heart full of adventure.
In 1986, Tony met the love of his life, Gail Jones, and everything changed. With their union, he not only gained a partner, but also became an instant father to two young children, Michael Bates and Turner Bates. From that moment on, Tony wasn’t just a stepfather—he became their hero.
Tony and Gail spent much of their marriage exploring the world together, creating memories that will outlast a lifetime. From the volcanoes of Costa Rica to the peaks of the Swiss Alps, from the landscapes of South Africa to the pyramids of Egypt, they embraced the beauty of the world. They walked in the footsteps of Jesus in Jerusalem and navigated the winding roads of Italy. Whether near or far, every journey was made richer by their deep love and shared spirit of adventure.
When they weren’t traveling, Tony poured his heart into his family, forty-two years of service with the UA Local Union 72, and his community. He was the head coach of Michael and Turner’s baseball, basketball, and football teams throughout their childhood. His influence extended far beyond his own kids—every child he coached saw him as a father figure, a mentor, and a source of unwavering support.
Tony was a strong and confident man, but he was equally known for his humility, kindness, and deep empathy and love for God. To many, he was a gentle giant—affectionately remembered as a big teddy bear whose presence made others feel seen, safe, and loved. But he will best be remembered by his sense of humor.
While Tony’s journey on Earth has come to a close, his eternal path with Jesus has just begun.
Tony is survived by his wife of 38 years, Gail, their children Michael Bates (SongEe) & Turner Bates (Ashley), and three grandchildren Kiersten, Harlow, and Rhett along with his cousin Sue Merritt and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be holding a private ceremony, with a Celebration of Life gathering to follow in the coming weeks. Details will be shared soon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Showers of Blessing Ministry, where Tony was passionate and supportive of building shower facilities for the homeless throughout Atlanta.
