Dorothy Olivia Clements Fletcher, affectionately known as “D’Olivia,” was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 19, 1940, to the late Reverend and Mrs. E.G. Clements. The youngest of nine children, Dorothy was born into a close-knit family whose foundation of faith, family, and love would remain central throughout her life.
D’Olivia was educated in the Atlanta Public Schools, attending Booker T. Washington High School before moving with her parents from Atlanta to Detroit, Michigan. She completed her senior year at Eastern High School, graduating in 1958. She then returned to Atlanta to continue her education at Spelman College, where she earned her degree in 1962. She later earned a Master of Education from the National Louis University in 1985. A proud Spelmanite throughout her life, she carried with her a deep appreciation for education and the opportunities it could create.
She went on to build a meaningful career as an educator, teaching at Avalon Park and later serving as a second-grade teacher at Parkside Academy. For 35 years, D’Olivia devoted herself to educating the children of Chicago, helping to shape young minds, nurture their potential, and lay a foundation upon which generations of students could learn, grow, and thrive.
Dorothy met Robert L. Fletcher, Jr., affectionately known as “Bob,” while they were both on their way to teaching assignments. Their meeting marked the beginning of a beautiful journey together, and on April 26, 1964, they were united in holy matrimony. Their life together was blessed with a daughter, Mia Olivia, whom they loved dearly. Dorothy and Bob shared forty-two years of marriage until his passing on July 2, 2006.
D’Olivia was a woman of grace, warmth, and unmistakable style. There was an elegance in the way she carried herself, in her manner, her speech, the way she dressed, and even the way she walked. Yet her elegance was matched by a warm and outgoing spirit. She loved conversation, enjoyed the company of others, and greeted people with a beautiful smile that reflected the warmth within her. She loved deeply and, in return, was deeply loved.
D’Olivia believed in living well and taking care of herself, inside and out. Long before wellness became fashionable, she embraced healthy eating, exercise, vitamins, and self-care, and readily shared what she learned with others. She found joy in collecting ceramic shoes, photography, golfing, and traveling with family and friends. She even embraced the art of belly dancing, another reflection of the confidence, energy, and sense of adventure with which she approached life. Her enthusiasm for wellness, adventure, and new experiences inspired those around her to live fully and take joy in the journey. More than the destinations themselves, however, D’Olivia cherished the people with whom she shared them.
On August 30, 2026, at 2:12 p.m., God called Dorothy home to her reward. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert L. Fletcher, Jr.; her parents, Reverend and Mrs. E.G. Clements; and her siblings, Hattie Clements Lawson, Emmanuel Clements, Jr., Anna Clements Milner, Nathaniel Clements, Vivian Clements Baldwin, and Walter Clements.
Cherishing her memory are her devoted daughter, Mia Olivia Lyles, and son-in-law, Christopher Lyles; her two loving grandsons, Ethan Lyles and Jordan Lyles; her sister, Dr. Carrie Clements Johnson; her godson, Gregory Smith; her goddaughters, Fatima Simmons, Donnetta Matthews, and Ellen Glenn; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, former students, and dear friends.
Dorothy’s journey cannot be measured simply by the years she lived, but by what she poured into them and what she leaves behind. Her life lives on in the family she loved, the students she taught, the memories she created, and the countless moments that now belong to those fortunate enough to have shared them with her.
Dorothy lived fully, loved deeply, and left an imprint that time cannot erase.
What she gave us remains.
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”- Proverbs 31:25
