In 1944 she married Harry Brown Turner of Munford, AL whom she was married to for 64 years. They later moved to the Atlanta area to raise their family. Martha worked for the State YMCA of Georgia in the mid-1950s and then worked for the National Council of YMCAs, retiring in 1987. She was the President of the Ladies Shrine Club in Conyers, GA, a Past President of the American Business Women’s Association – Regency Chapter, and Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Decatur, GA.
Martha is survived by her brother John C. Hobbs and sister Betty Jo Jones; daughter-in-law Barbara Aguilar Turner; granddaughters Michele Alana Turner and Allison Armstrong Haynes Rodriguez (Elliot); grandson Michael Allen Turner Jr. (Ashley); great-grandsons Nathan Turner and Noah Rodriguez; and great-granddaughters Olivia Haynes, Emma Haynes and McKinsey Turner, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Martha enjoyed reading, playing cards, bowling and gardening. She also enjoyed music saying that her favorite childhood memory was “singing on the radio when she was five years old”. Martha loved “old movies” noting that her personal hero was John Wayne because “he stood for the same things I do…since he died the world has gone to hell in a handbasket.” But her greatest love was being a grandmother, which she said was one of her “major accomplishments.” One of her favorite past times was “taking her grandchildren on a special evening of fun” and she and Harry rarely missed a soccer or baseball game and were always in the audience for chorus and theatre performances.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry Brown Turner; children Michael Allen Turner and Cheryl Turner Armstrong; son-in-law Weyman Armstrong; grandson Matthew Armstrong; parents Robbie Lee Sanders and Henry Lonza Hobbs; and siblings Harold Hobbs, James Hobbs, and Edith Hobbs Brown.
Martha had a great “love for people” and wanted to be remembered as a “fun-loving person.” Certainly, her friends and family can unanimously attest to this fact. Virtually all of the stories and memories that have been shared with us during the recent days, weeks, and months have common themes centered around her humor, quick wit and fiery “no nonsense” personality. No one ever needed to wonder what Martha was thinking about a given topic. She would absolutely tell you and we are grateful to have been fortunate enough to have had a front row seat to her tremendous “fun loving” life.
