

grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Alabama after a life
devoted to service, creativity, and family.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, Bob served his country with honor for
26 years, retiring at the rank of Sergeant First Class. His leadership,
discipline, and commitment to excellence earned him deep respect
from those who served alongside him. Following his military retirement,
Bob was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by the Governor of Georgia, a
recognition of his outstanding service and contributions to his state and
nation.
After his military career, Bob pursued his lifelong passion for the arts.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, he became a gifted and well-respected actor
and voice artist whose work touched audiences worldwide. His film
and television credits include Antwone Fisher (2002), Daddy’s Little
Girls (2007), Selma, Lord, Selma (1999), and Supercool (2021), along with
memorable roles in The Vampire Diaries, Outer Banks, In the Heat of
the Night, and I’ll Fly Away. His talent, authenticity, and voice made him
a beloved figure both on and off screen.
Bob shared a remarkable life with his late wife, Dr. Doris Derby —
an educator, civil rights activist, photographer, and cultural historian.
Together, they modeled a legacy of purpose, advocacy, and love for
community.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter Lisa Sellers
and her husband David Sellers, his devoted son Daniel Banks, and two
granddaughters, Dr. Ashley Gilmore and her husband Calvin Gilmore
Jr., and Alexis Carr. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters,
Amiya and Aubrey Gilmore, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Those who knew Bob will remember his quiet strength, warm
smile, sense of humor, and deep compassion for others. He lived with
dignity, led with humility, and inspired everyone around him to pursue
excellence while staying true to themselves.
