Birmingham, Alabama to the late Robert D. and Minnie T. Simmons.
He attended Western-Olin High School in Birmingham, AL. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age.
After moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1970, he pursued a career at Presto Lite, he then worked 25 years at Owens Illinois where he later retired.
Thornton departed this earthly life on Monday March 1, 2021 at Emory Medical Midtown Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia.
Thornton was preceded in death by his father Robert D. Simmons, his mother Minnie T. Simmons and his sister Amaryllis McSwain.
He leaves to cherish, two daughters Katrina Simmons Lavender of Birmingham, AL; Tara Simmons Kelsey (Chauncey) of Atlanta, GA; two sons Thornton (Bucky) Bester of Montgomery, AL; David Wimbush of Atlanta, GA; stepdaughter Sonia Gail Thomas of Birmingham, AL, three brothers Robert, Waymon, and Bruce (Benita) all from Atlanta, GA; two sisters Edith Dell Kornegay and Lillie Hall both of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Nakia B. Lavender, Kayla Bester, Tiara and Haile K Leakes, Christian and Caleb Kelsey, Ethan Wimbush and Dayved Wimbush and a host of relatives and friends.
