I’ve known Walt for 25 years from working with the King Center by way of Alice JOHNSON and Rev Orange and let me tell you his passing was as if a family member died. My dad and grandfather died of cancer and from the beginning of his diagnosis to the end I was there as a friend and nephew. He was always a positive light in my life who saw the best in others and not once withered in the face of what was going to happen. He always said, “I’m going to put it in God’s hands”. I’ve often told others he dealt with it better than I did. I’ve always been overprotective of him, but he was indeed a soldier until the end. My last words from one vet to another were, “ I’ll see you on the flip side. You will always be family to me”.

We got to know Walt on a Pilgrimage in 1998 organized by Rev. James Orange and Gordon Sellers. He was kind with a ready smile and a deep commitment to the legacy and work of the Civil Rights Movement. It was an honor to know and walk with him.

It was a pleasure working with Walt at Georgia messenger service. I was one of his dispatchers for many years and always wished we had more Employees like him. He was a man I looked up to as a hard worker and someone who cared about his family and children more than anything.

It saddens me to know that you are no longer here. I have known Walt since I was eight years old and over the years we lost touch, but always managed to get in contact with each other from time to time. The world has lost a great man, but heaven has gained an angel. He will forever hold a special place in my heart and will forever be missed. Save a place for me up there and have a plate of chicken and ribs with your delicious BBQ sauce for me. Until we meet again my fellow April/Aries baby. I love you dearly and you are and forever will be my "Wally". My prayers and condolences to the family.

Walt was an inspiration to many. Stood up for civil rights, labor rights, and always had a smile. He provided security for Winnie Mandela when she toured America. He was the kind of man I strive to be.

Walt was a strong and faithful member and officer of Local3263 Communications Workers of America. A brave activist for justice and workers rights locally and nationally. A wonderful friend to me and so many others. This world will miss you more than you know Dear Friend.
