Born and raised in Calvert, Texas, Christopher was the son of Will and Elizabeth Portis. He graduated from W.D. Spigner High School in 1968 before answering the call to serve his country in 1969. Christopher proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he had a distinguished career that spanned 22 years. Rising through the ranks, he retired as a Master Sergeant, a testament to his dedication, leadership, and the respect he earned from his peers. Following his military service, Christopher continued his service to his community with a second career at Baylor Scott & White, where he worked for 18 years before retiring.
Christopher met the love of his life, Christa, and together they built a beautiful family. A devoted husband, father, and Papa, his greatest joy was his family. A creature of habit, he never missed an opportunity “to tell it like it is and do exactly what he wanted to do”. He took pride in making Sunday dinner for the family and having the grandkids over at Papa’s house every Friday. His presence brought comfort, his strength provided security, and the values he instilled will carry on for generations. Wise, hardworking, and always fair, he led by example, shaping the lives of those around him.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Christa Portis; his parents, Will and Elizabeth Portis; and his siblings: Jo Jones, Larry Portis, Charles Portis, and Marilyn Sue Green.
Christopher leaves to cherish his memory his four daughters: Nicole Ransom, Christina Foley (Derek), Vanessa Smith, and LaToya Portis. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren: Hannah Ransom, Nautica and Kennady Lockett, Derek C. Foley, Ava, Laila, and Christa Smith, and Sidney and Carter West. He was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Michael "MJ" and Cameron Roquemore, and Kynlee and Kade Jackson; as well as a special friend, Deloris Pittman.
He is survived by his three brothers, Robert Brown, Ray Brown (Jean), and George Portis (Kathy); along with a host of other relatives and friends who will forever treasure his memory.
Christopher’s strength and unwavering love for his family will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
