George Lee Huebner, Jr. was born May 22, 1918 in Bay City, Texas to George L. Huebner and Leta Belle Taylor Huebner. He was the oldest of five sons and a 5th generation Texan. He grew up in Lane City, graduating from Wharton High School in 1937. His early interests included Amateur Radio (W5GDK), electronics, Scouting (in which he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout), and playing his cornet. One of his favorite achievements was winning first place in state competition on his cornet during High School. George graduated from The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, class of ‘41, earning Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in electrical engineering. While in college, he met his future wife, Patricia Penelope Todd. Their 63-year marriage began on December 27, 1941 in Houston, Texas. Dr. Huebner was a research scientist and Professor of Geosciences at Texas A&M University, specializing in radar electronics and remote sensing. In 1978 he was awarded The Association of Former Students Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Student Relationships. He felt very honored by this particular award in that the recommendation came from his students. He loved teaching and mentoring his students as he had a passion for learning himself. He retired from Texas A&M University as Professor Emeritus of Meteorology in 1988. George was a founding member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, a Course Evaluator for the American Council on Education, and a Charter member of the Matagorda Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He was a member of College Station Noon Lions Club, St. Thomas Men’s Prayer Breakfast Group, and the Shipley’s CRS group. He served for several years on the Board of Directors of St. Michael’s
Academy and was the Brazos County Civil Defense Director for ten years. He remained an avid amateur radio operator and remained active in Boy Scouting. He was a commercially rated airplane pilot. George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia, his brother, Marcus Taylor Huebner and wife, Wynelle, and his nephew, Richard Huebner. He is survived by his son, George L. Huebner III of College Station, and his three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Allen Woody of Dallas, Nancy and Robby Brown, and Anne and James Beamer of College Station. He is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Bert and Dorothy Huebner of Bay City, William and Jutta Huebner of Houston, and David and Ruth Huebner of Victoria; six grandchildren: Todd Huebner Hall, Joshua Taylor Woody, Matthew Todd Woody, William George Brown, Sarah Margaret Brown, and Laura Ellen Brown; three great grandchildren: Mackenzie Eryn Hall, Ryan Patrick Hall, and Cameron Thomas Woody, and 15 nieces and nephews.
