

Helen Matthews, 92, entered into rest on 28 June 2026 at her daughter’s residence in College Station. Visitation will be held on Monday, 6 July 2026 from 5PM-8PM at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station, Texas. Tuesday, 7 July 2026 a Graveside service will be held at 10:30AM at the Welborn Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Welborn Community Center. A Celebration of Life service will start at 2PM at The Langford Methodist Retirement Community Chapel.
Helen was born 2 May 1934 in Kaufman, Texas, the daughter of Henry and Annie (Pucelic) Babovec. She was a longtime church secretary first in Longview, Texas and later at the FUMC in Athens, Texas. After retiring, Helen moved to College Station, Texas where she was an avid bowler and gardener. In addition, she loved animals, most dearly her cat Sparky, moved with her to her apartment at the Langford, where she was blessed with many great friends. She also loved to play dominos and winning at cards, especially Shanghia Rummy, and enjoyed living on a horse ranch. Helen was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church in College Station and attended services at the Langford.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John Matthews. Survivors include three children, Nancy Magnussen and her husband Walt, Mike Matthews (recently widowed from beloved wife Mary), John Dennis Matthews and his wife Carolyn; sister, Carolyn Howard; seven grandchildren, twenty-three great- grandchildren; one niece and three nephews.
