Kevin Eddy Murphy, 60, of College Station, Texas, died of cardiac arrest on August 14, 2016, while backpacking in the Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. He was born on April 14, 1956, in Neptune, NJ, and is the only child of Richard and Lyn Murphy, both deceased. Kevin is survived by his wife of 33 years, Dr. Robin Murphy, a professor at Texas A&M, and his son, Allan Murphy, a junior at Florida Southern College. He joins their daughter, Kate, who passed away at 17 in 2005. Kevin held a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Upon graduation he worked for Dow Chemical in Plaquemine, Louisiana, and later at PrintPack in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired from chemical engineering in 1992, but put his expertise to work as a home handyman and “Mr. Mom”, becoming a fantastic cook and woodworker. He loved the outdoors, especially camping and hiking in the wilderness where he spent his last moments. He traveled around the world, wherever Robin’s research would take her, playing guitar and ukulele, and charming everyone with his wry sense of humor. Kevin also loved working with kids, and he spent many years as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America. Kevin was a warm and funny person, talented, always ready to lend a hand, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at 3:00PM at the Memorial Funeral Chapel College Station, 901 Texas Ave S, College Station, Texas.
