Olive Rose (Bischoff) Black, 87, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, at 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station, Texas 77845. Interment will follow in College Station Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Her parents were Adolph and Ethel Scott Bischoff and she was born in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin on September 30, 1923. She attended school in Wisconsin, graduating from Mt. Horeb High School and Groves Barnhardt Secretarial School in Madison. While working at the
University of Wisconsin, she met her husband-to-be, Dr. William Elmer Black, who was commissioned as a Major in the Army. They were married in Madison at Grace Episcopal Church on June 26, 1948. They honeymooned in Canada, and settled on a farm in Belleville, Wis., later moved to Winter Park and Lakeland, Florida where their four children were born. The family moved to College Station, Texas, in 1966, and settled in Bryan in 1967. Olive worked as a secretary with the Texas A&M Singing Cadets, a realtor, and an oil and gas land-man, and learned to paint in her spare time. She became an artist and produced many beautiful landscapes, in oil, acrylic and watercolor. She has won many awards for her works, as well as sold and been commissioned for them. Dr. Black worked with Texas A&M University as a professor of Agriculture Economics, where he was honored as Professor Emeritus.
Olive was a Member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas, the Texas A&M Agricultural Extension Service and the Brazos Valley Art League. She also enjoyed baking, watching sports and staying up on current events. She lived in her home in Bryan until August 2010, when she moved into the Carriage Inn of Bryan. She enjoyed all her friends and neighbors there, and activities including crafts, games, singing and dancing. Olive was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Bill Black who passed away on March 31, 2001; her brother, Delbert Bischoff; her sister, Bonnie Belle; and a brotherin- law, Clifford Aavang. Survivors include her children including son, Jeffrey and his wife, Sandy, who reside in Houston and their two children, Michael and Michelle; her daughter, Jennifer Black, and her husband, Richard Lyman, who reside in Novato, Calif.; her son, Randy Black who resides in Katy, Texas, and his son Daniel Black; and her daughter, Renee Black who resides in Seattle, Wash., with her boyfriend, Julian Sanchez; and her sister, Grace Aavang, who resides in Verona, Wis.; and extended family including nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorials may be donated to the Brazos Valley Art League, TAMU Extension Service, William E. Black Scholarship or the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas.
