OBITUARY

Tommie Jordan

March 23, 1921November 21, 2019

Tommie Jo Tibbets Jordan was born at home just outside of Alanreed, Texas to Marvin and Hazel Tibbets on March 23, 1921 and passed away on November 21, 2019, at Carriage Inn in Bryan where she had lived the last three years.

Tommie graduated from Lefors, Texas High School in 1939 where she was very active in band, choir, drum and bugle corps, and journalism. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang for special occasions and in the church choir for many years.

Raymond “Pinto” Jordan entered Tommie’s life when she was 15. He was the youth group sponsor at the Lefors Methodist Church where she attended. Although Pinto was attracted to Tommie at that time, he waited until she “grew up” before he asked her for a date, as he was older than she. In the spring of her senior year, Pinto asked her for a date, and neither of them thereafter dated anyone else. They were married on February 14, 1940 and were married for 60 years before he passed away in 2000. They are now reunited.

Pinto worked for the carbon plant in Lefors until 1961 when he and the family were transferred to Seagraves. Tommie was a housewife who participated in all church activities and loved her children Nancy and Joey and did everything for them. She was a talented seamstress who also crocheted and crafted many decorative items in retirement. She was active in church and social organizations and learned to play bridge early in her life.

Pinto’s job took them to Franklin, Louisiana in 1970, where they lived for three years. They enjoyed living in Franklin and joined the local country club where Tommie played bridge and Pinto played golf. Pinto was then transferred back to Seagraves where they lived until 2000.

After Pinto retired, he and Tommie lived a happy and peaceful life in Seagraves, Texas. In retirement, Pinto painted the exterior of neighbors’ houses and Tommie became a gifted artist, specializing mostly in oils. She loved painting flowers and landscapes. Pinto made display frames for her paintings and they attended many art shows in the Seagraves area where she displayed and sold her paintings. As Pinto’s health started failing, they moved to Midland, Texas in 2000, to be closer to their son Joey and his family. Pinto passed away in August of 2000 and Tommie moved to Bryan in 2010 to be closer to their daughter Nancy.

Tommie enjoyed living at Waldenbrook Estates in Bryan when she first moved to Bryan and made new friends with whom she played bridge and chicken foot. As her health declined, she moved into the Carriage Inn Assisted Living senior community. She also made new friends there and played dominoes daily until her declining health prevented her doing so.

Tommie is survived by her daughter Nancy Gilmore and husband Bob of College Station; her son Joe Jordan and wife Lana of Odessa; grandchildren Kevin Gilmore and wife Danielle of Shoreacres; Shelley Larsen and husband Spidey of Cedar Park; Tia Parham of Midland; and Michael Jordan of Alamosa, Colorado. She is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, Sadie Larsen, Peyton Burris, Jordan Parham, Savannah Gilmore, Bekah Gilmore, and Charlotte Young.

Pinto, Tommie’s parents, and her brothers Robin, Ferrell and Glenn predeceased her.

There are many people to thank for the care of our Mom. Thanks to the Carriage Inn Assisted Living staff for lovingly caring for her in her declining years. The dedicated nurses and staff of Hospice Brazos Valley also took excellent and loving care of her. The Hospice nurse, Bob and Nancy were with Mom and made her comfortable as she passed from this earth. Katy Haislet, Assistant Pastor at A&M United Methodist Church, visited Mom and provided spiritual assistance to her in her last months. Many thanks also to Brenda Pitre for always bringing a positive and cheerful attitude when she visited and cared for Mom.

Memorials for Tommie can be made to A&M United Methodist Church in College Station or Hospice Brazos Valley in Bryan.
