Alma Pauline Large Jarrett, Pauline to those who knew her, had a peace loving nature and a quick wit as many will testify. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who never tired of helping and nurturing her family whenever needed. Her biggest claim to fame was her homemade custard pies which she took to each church gathering and never brought any leftovers home.
Her wit and sense of humor was unequaled. After her husband, Bill, passed away, she would blithely say she had no interest in ever remarrying unless the man was rich and had less than six months to live. Her life’s calling was in teaching school, and she was a wonderful and dedicated teacher. She loved her students and tried to not only teach them math, but to also teach them about life. After her first open heart surgery, current and previous students reached out to her from all over the country and sent letters and cards galore while also sending their prayers. It wasn’t unusual for her to encounter her students long after they left middle school. She was almost always able to remember their names, who they had been friends with, where they sat in her room, and always had a personal memory to share with them. While she was almost always their oldest teacher, she was also their favorite teacher. She had a magical way of relating to each child and touching their lives. On the first day of school every year and in every single class she would tell them her age. She said she had always wondered that about her teachers and she didn’t want them guessing!
Pauline was known by her family as Sis, Wife, Mother/Mom, Grandmother, and Memaw. The stories of her childhood growing up on a farm in northeastern Oklahoma during the depression were many and always entertaining. She was a member of DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) of which she was very proud. As an adult, she loved antiques, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and playing bridge. She was active in BSF and loved her church, her Sunday school class, and Jesus. She read her Bible daily, and, during the last few days of her life when she could no longer see well enough, she would have people read her scripture every day.
Pauline was born on October 4, 1925 (at home in Quapaw Oklahoma) and left those who loved her dearly on August 29, 2022, just a few weeks shy of her 97th birthday. She outlived all of her and her husband’s immediate family members. We can only imagine the rejoicing and many happy reunions she had when she reached heaven. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Jarrett, Paul and Marion Large (parents), and Paxton Wages (great grandson). She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Debbie) Hillaker, and her son, Mark Jarrett (wife, Kennye Beth Hill Jarrett); four grandchildren, Rebecca Jarrett Brooks (husband, Trent), Jennifer Hillaker Hellmann (husband, Troy), Nathan Jarrett (wife, Kirticia), and Kaitlyn Hillaker Wages (husband, Seth). Her legacy also includes twelve great grandchildren from whom she got great pleasure and loved to brag about to anyone who would listen. She was very proud of her family.
She will be greatly missed and always loved until the day we are each reunited with her in heaven. Her memorial service will be Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Birdville Baptist Church, 3141 Carson Street, Fort Worth, TX 76117 at 2PM.
