Betty Katherine Herzing Tanner, daughter of Jacob and Clara Herzing, was born February 17, 1934 in Piopolis, Illinois. She grew up in Dahlgren, Illinois in a large family with 2 sisters and 6 brothers, all living in a 2-bedroom house with an outhouse bathroom. Betty attended public school in Dahlgren, Illinois where she was an enthusiastic student and cheerleader. She graduated from high school in 1952 and immediately moved to Urbana, Illinois where she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her degree in 1955 and began working as a Registered Nurse in the Mercy Hospital Operating Room until a fateful day in 1956 when she met a suave Air Force aviator in the City Park in Paxton, Illinois. That aviator was James (Jim/Bud) Alton Tanner, the love of her life!
Betty married Bud on January 19, 1957 and began her 26 year career as a military spouse. This union was blessed with six children. Family was paramount for Betty and she dedicated herself to creating a new home for her family in 22 locations, residing in 10 states (Illinois, Georgia, Washington DC, Texas, Alabama, New Jersey, California, Missouri, Kansas & Ohio), and 1 country (Japan). Bud preceded Betty in death on August 5, 1996, after 39 years of marriage.
Betty lived life to the fullest and had many interests. She was committed to her Catholic faith and served as a church volunteer. She was also dedicated to making sure that everyone received a birthday card from her, and if you were under the age of 21 you could expect a little something extra ($) in your card! She also loved to bowl and spent many years competing on bowling leagues. Less strenuous hobbies included Garden Club, where she served as president, and countless card games. She also thoroughly enjoyed traveling, and over her lifetime she was able to visit many parts of the world with her husband, family, and friends.
Betty felt her biggest accomplishment in life was being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
