Bill was born in Hope, Arkansas on December 24, 1934, to Nina Elizabeth Bristow Thompson and Johnie M. Thompson. He lived in the Hope and Columbus areas working on the family farm until he was 18 years of age. He worked in the Hope and Texarkana areas for a couple of years. He and his wife, Frances Collier Thompson, moved to Dallas in January 1954. They had two sons, Michael Alan born July 27, 1954, and Jimmy Lynn born May 12, 1957. Frances passed away in July 1977.
Bill worked at a service station, in the moving business and General Motors in Arlington before joining The Al Semtner Drug Depot in 1956. He started in the warehouse, then in the warehouse office, then manager of the warehouse to manager of the complete warehousing operation. During this time, he went to “IBM” school in the morning, worked his regular job until time to go to SMU at night, and then back to his regular Job, getting home at 10 to 12 p.m. He set up the company’s first “IBM” system.
He turned the complete warehousing operation over to Eddie DeVoll when he had the opportunity to move into the Sales Operation in the Sales Administration Department. Then he was made manager of the Sales Administration Department and then Account Executive for some of our largest clients, such as Foster Grant Sunglasses, StarKist Tuna, Wella Balsam, and Loreal. The promotion was to
V. P. Sales. He bought stock in the company over a period of several years and was the fourth largest stockholder after the original three owners. When the original owners were ready to retire, he and three of his associates put a deal together to buy them out. He was named President and Chairman of the Board.
Bill married LaVerne L. Gilstrap on May 12, 1978. She brought two lovely daughters into the marriage, Victoria, age six, and Malissa, age four. He adopted them two years later.
Bill retired at age 62 and he continued to travel the world with his wife LaVerne they would spend time at their condo in Kawai, and they eventually would build a retirement home in Silverthorne Colorado
They were married 35 years when she went to be with our Lord on August 30, 2013.
He and LaVerne are members of Center Point Church in North Richland Hills, Texas
Bill continued to be involved with the Church by supporting the Children’s Ministry and sending Children to kid’s camp, attending the Men’s Bible study, and being involved with his Home Team Ministry.
Bill loved spending time with his Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren. He was involved even picking up his Granddaughter from school 13 years ago and his Great-granddaughters from school just last year.
He loved to tell stories to his entire family and friends about growing up on the farm, swimming in the creek, riding horses, and all the adventures he went on with his brother and sister.
A life verse that Bill wrote often was -Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
