Carol was born on July 31st, 1939, to Henry Clifford Teague and Erma Lorraine McDonald in Vernon, Texas. After graduating as valedictorian of her high school at the age of 16, she went on to study English at Texas Tech University where she earned her Bachelors of English at the age of 19. Carol loved to teach! She started teaching while still in college and continued teaching English throughout most of her adult life. Later, she continued her schooling later to acquire her Masters in English from the University of Houston in 1988.
Carol met her husband of 63 years, John, in Lubbock, Texas at the Night Owl 3 café. John was in flight school and Carol was out for lunch with a friend when she stopped to look at John’s 1960 MG with a tonneau. She had never seen a car with a zipper, so she had to inquire about it. John asked Carol if she wanted to take a ride in the car, to which she flat out lied and said she had “to ask her parents.” So, John followed Carol to her friend’s house with whom she was living with in Lubbock to get permission. Carol did come clean about the lie during her ride with John because she could never stand a guilty conscience. John and Carol dated for three months while John was in flight school and close to the end of those three months, he proposed to which Carol emphatically accepted. They were married on August 20, 1960, at the Methodist church in McAdoo, Texas. After marriage, John was in the Air Force, so they moved around but went from Texas to Michigan to California to Austin to New Hampshire and then to Atlanta where John started working for Delta Airlines. From there it was back to Texas where they have lived for the remainder of their lives. John and Carol have two children, Chris, and Heidi; but when Carol’s mother, passed away, Carol’s two minor aged sisters, Sandra, and Sherry, were taken in by John and Carol where they continued to grow up with their other two children.
Carol had a few favorite things in her life. She loved to travel, with her favorite vacations being to London. She also loved music boxes, collecting Lladro figurines, and all things Flamingo. Her greatest joy though was children. She loved having kids in her house from her own children’s friends coming over to her grandchildren and eventually her great-grandchildren being over. Nothing gave her more joy than being involved with, playing with, and teaching children. Carol was also a devout Christian and spent her life in service to the Lord. She touched so many individual lives through her kindness, care, and genuine concern for others, which is evident as so many have gathered to celebrate her life here on Earth with us all.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Henry, and Erma Teague. Her brothers Don and Bobby Teague; and niece Tiffany Teague. She is survived by her husband, John C. Fertig Jr. and children Chris Fertig, Heidi and husband Mike Faircloth, and Robin Suttle. Her sisters, Sandra Clark and son Jerrod Clark, Sherry Willis and daughters Sarah Elizabeth and Dana Willis, and sister-in-law Julie Teague and sons, Chad and wife Amy Teague and Josh Teague.
