Charles Lee Long was born February 5, 1941 in Greenville Texas, to Cecil Fred Long and Elizabeth Pearl Williams Long. He entered eternal rest on Monday, August 30,2021, in North Richland Hills, Texas, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 25 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, two of his sisters, Doris, and Charline and two brothers, Cecil Jr, Ray.
He is survived by four sons, four daughter-in-laws, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandkids .
Charles had nine siblings. Sharing a home with four sisters, Doris, Francis, Rena and Charline, plus five brothers, Cecil Jr., Ray, James, John and Michael, must have been quite the adventure. . Charles appreciated spending time with his family and friends. He shared a special bond with his parents, brothers and sisters. He kept contact with them all as much as he could. If he couldn’t visit them in person, they were never more than a phone call away.
Charles had been married twice. 1961-1983 to Wilma ‘Deloris’ Barksdale, producing four sons Charles Jr, Randal, Terry and Jerry. 1985-2010 to Jo Ann Robinson, assisting her in the raising and loving care of her granddaughter Taylor Marie.
Charles enjoyed countless family camping and fishing excursions. He often spoke of family trips and the wonderful times he spent “hanging out” with his boys. He loved being surrounded by his loved ones whether on the back of a motorcycle, front seat of a car or merely sitting on the sofa watching a movie with great-grandkids..
Charles was constantly waiting for the next adventure. Disney World was one of his favorite destinations. He visited the park once when his sons were young and multiple times later with his son’s, Charles Jr., family. Always up for a bit of fun, he embraced the idea of matching t-shirts for trips and even donned a costume for “Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween” event one year. And yes of course, he made certain to receive candy from every attendant at every station throughout the park! Forever embracing the spirit of adventure, if he was invited to go on a trip, no matter the destination, his bag would be packed or better yet, he would buy what he needed while on the road.
Charles was extremely sociable. He could always be found Gaming with his friends in one fashion or another; pool, cards, dominos and lest we forget a rousing game of “Pass the Pigs” with his grandkids.
The age of technology was not going to pass him by. He saw each new device a challenge and was eager to try out new phones, tablets and computers. He might have required a little assistance, but that did not intimidate him in the least.
During his time on the workforce, he maintained various careers. In his younger years he was employed by Leonard Brothers Department Store located in Fort Worth, Texas. His last place of employment was for Pepisco /Frito Lay. He retired from the company after 30 years.
Charles’s sense of humor, quest for adventure and undying love for his family will be greatly missed. He will be ever in our hearts and his spirit will never be far away. Whenever the unexpected happens, the one thing that makes us turn around and scratch our heads, we will know that Charlie Papa had a hand in it. Ever the prankster always making us smile.
