Born on May 31, 1946, in Fort Worth, Texas, Don was the beloved son of Robert and Mary Gladys Gardner. He came to be known for his steady presence, warm heart, and quiet strength—qualities that shaped the man he became. He carried himself with humility, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering kindness that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Don proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969, including service in Vietnam. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of duty, loyalty, and honor, values he embodied throughout his life. He remained proud of his service and the bonds he formed during those years.
Following his military service, Don dedicated 40 years to American Airlines, beginning as a fleet service clerk and later becoming an aircraft mechanic. His career reflected his reliability, skill, and commitment. He took pride in honest work and valued doing things the right way.
He had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and working with his hands. He spent countless hours caring for his home and land, hunting, and riding and maintaining motorcycles, a passion he enjoyed for nearly 50 years. Known for his generosity and compassionate soul, Don was always the first to offer help, never expecting anything in return. He showed his love through actions more than words. His kindness was quiet but constant, and his presence a comfort to many.
Above all, Don cherished his family. He shared 54 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Charlene. Their life together was built on love, devotion, and partnership. Charlene was his constant companion and greatest support, and their marriage stood as a true testament to commitment and enduring love.
Don found his greatest joy in time spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to four grandchildren—grandsons Deegan and Rowan, and granddaughters Adeline and Amelia. Being “Papa” was one of his greatest blessings. He delighted in engaging with them and watching them grow, cheering them on, and spending time with them. They will forever remember his gentle spirit, quiet encouragement, and unconditional love.
Don is survived by his devoted wife, Charlene; his children, Clayton Gardner and Ashlee Dempsey and her husband, Allan; his brother, Ralph and his wife, Marie; his sister-in-law, Donna Glasser; and his cherished grandchildren, Deegan and Rowan Gardner, and Adeline and Amelia Dempsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Gladys; his brother, Robert; and his sisters, Lenore and Suzanne.
A Celebration of Life for Don will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home on Saturday, February 21st, 2026 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. A committal with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. at I.O.O.F. Westlake Cemetery.
Don will be remembered for his love of family, faithful service, kindness to others, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him.
