Born in 1957 in San Sebastián, Spain, to Roberto Ruiz-Reza and Socorro Ilzarbe-Cenoz, Elena spent her early years in her beloved homeland. She pursued higher education at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, earning a Master’s degree in Physical Education. Her career began as a schoolteacher, but her talents soon led her to a successful modeling career in both print and television, where she appeared in numerous national commercials.
In 1993, Elena married the love of her life, David Sambrano, and together they built a beautiful family. She is survived by their three children: Grace Elena, Weston (fiancée Anna Bazaldua), and Jake, all of whom reside in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Elena was preceded in death by her parents, her eldest brother, Roberto Ruiz, and her brother-in-law, Alberto Lacaci. She is survived by her siblings: Emy Ilzarbe Sordo (and husband Leli Sordo), Teresa Ilzarbe Lacaci, and Miguel Ángel Ilzarbe Ruiz (and wife Marialuí Alza). Elena cherished her 15 years in Colorado, where she developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors. She often expressed seeing God's handiwork in the grandeur of the mountains and found joy in hiking and skiing. A remarkable skier, she spent countless seasons on the slopes and returned to Colorado frequently after moving to Texas to share her love for nature with her children. Her passion for travel was boundless, taking her to every continent, with annual trips to her cherished Spain and hometown Fuenterrabía.
An avid learner and researcher, Elena homeschooled her children from first grade through high school, approaching each subject with enthusiasm and rigor. She was a devoted speech coach for the Speak Out North Texas speech and debate club and held a deep appreciation for American politics and the history on how this great nation was founded. Her insatiable curiosity inspired all who knew her.
Elena's zest for life was contagious, her spontaneity uplifting, and her generosity boundless. She welcomed everyone with a warm smile, fostering an atmosphere of God’s unconditional love and kindness. Her hospitality was marked by elegance and vitality, and she delighted in opening her home for gatherings, creating memories filled with joy and laughter.
