Emma Jean Gregg, born on October 29, 1937, in the rolling hills of Kentucky, gracefully departed on March 8, 2024, which poetically coincided with International Women's Day. This alignment seems fitting for a woman with incredible strength and unwavering devotion to family. Born to Curtis and Mary Jackson Green, Emma navigated the challenges of her upbringing in rural Kentucky, which instilled in her resilience and determination at a young age.
In 1953, she wed her first love, Boyd Denver Young (preceded in death), and had six children: Bonnie Griffin (James), Charles Young (Debbie), Larry Young, Debbie Davis (Kennie), Cindy Kirkland, and Stacy Davis (Robert). In the 60s, life's twists and turns led her to Texas, where, as a single mother, she worked as a nurse aide at a nursing home and cleaned houses to make ends meet. A few years later, introduced by friends, she met her soul mate, Calvin Gregg (preceded in death). Their union in 1969 wove together two families, akin to a real-life Brady Bunch tale, encompassing 10 children, with the addition of Calvin's sons: Belton, Jackie, Ricky and Randy "Scooter" (preceded in death).
Over the years, Emma's family blossomed, and she became known as "Granner," welcoming 29 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Emma's affection for her family knew no bounds. She showed her love through food, always asking if you were hungry and offering to make you something. The dessert table was filled every holiday as she ensured everyone had their favorite.
Even amidst her battle with dementia, she never forgot to inquire about the welfare of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will miss her phone calls singing us the Happy Birthday song and cherish memories like her homemade Halloween costumes, how she and Calvin "Paw Paw" loved to go camping and fishing and her magical green thumb that nurtured everything she touched.
Emma embraced life with zest, adorning herself with timeless style in every era and season. She loved to dance and make you laugh with her quick wit and humor. You could always count on her for a good zinger. She appreciated and relished simple pleasures, like a good smoke break on the back porch, watching and feeding the birds, her beloved Western TV shows, and most of all, having her family around her.
Though her absence is heavy on our hearts, we find solace in believing she is now reunited with cherished loved ones in Heaven, perhaps dancing to the melodies of a George Jones song. Emma Jean "Granner," your legacy of love endures. We love you more!
A funeral for Emma will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, Texas 76034. Following the funeral will be a committal service at 3:00 PM at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park, 5725 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034.
