Ernestine Puckett (her parents didn’t give her a middle name, figuring that Ernestine was long enough) was born in Gorman, Texas on August 4, 1931 and died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, January 7, 2024 in Colleyville, Texas, secure in her belief as a Christian that she would instantly be welcomed into heaven by her Savior and Lord Jesus. She was the youngest of 3 daughters born to Myrtle and Ernest Willis.
The family eventually settled in Denton Texas where all the girls attended the University of North Texas.
Ernestine earned a teaching degree and began her career in Fort Worth in 1953 teaching 3rd grade. In 1955, she moved to Meadowbrook Elementary in Fort Worth to teach kindergarten and she remained there for the rest of her career, retiring in 1990. Ernestine met the love of her life, Paul Puckett at Poly Baptist church in Fort Worth. They were married on November 22, 1953, and had been married almost 55 years at the time of Paul's death in March of 2008. Paul and Ernestine had 3 sons, Doug, Mark and Kirk, all of whom stayed in the DFW area.
Once they got the kids out of the house, Paul and Ernestine literally traveled all over the world. For example, on a trip to Egypt, Ernestine rode on a camel, which she wasn't too thrilled about, but did anyway because she knew Paul would never let her hear the end of it if she didn’t try it. (She hated it, btw!). She was also very active with her church groups, first at Poly Baptist, then Sagamore Hill Baptist and finally at what is now known as Cross City Church. Then there was her Delta Kappa Gamma group and she played in a Mahjong group for many years. Ernestine made many life-long friends along the way and will be missed by many. Thank you to everyone who cared for her and treated her and Paul so good over the years.
Our family can't thank you enough. Special thanks go to Carma and the rest of the dedicated Homewatch team and to the 3 Oaks Hospice team, all of which were a tremendous help taking care of Ernestine in the last several months!
Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her sisters Peggy Jo Crouch and Myra Nell McLaughlin, her son Mark Puckett and her parents Ernest T. and Myrtle Willis. She is survived by her son Doug (Sheila) of Colleyville, Kirk (Kayla) of North Richland Hills, and grandchildren Tyler, Travis, Tara, Nicholas, Ashley Chow (Jon), and 1 great-grandchild Audrey Chow. Also, she is also survived by her nephew Jerry McLaughlin (Minerva), and niece Judy Jones (Bud) and cousin Virginia Meyer of Colorado and a host of friends.
