Born on October 6, 1936, in De Queen, Arkansas, Evalyn Kay was the daughter of Walter Brinkley (WB) Roberts and Georgia Evelyn Gilstrap Roberts. She grew up in the small town of De Queen and later Wink, Texas, where she was in the band and graduated as Salutatorian from Wink High School in 1954 (with fellow classmate Roy Orbison.) Later, she married David Meers III and moved to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex to raise their children, Jana, David, and Bill.
Kay worked as a secretary on and off for many years but found the most joy in staying home to be engaged with her kids. She served as girl scout troop leader and as the first female athletic booster club president for MacArthur High School, where David and Bill played football and Jana was a Cardette. Mama Kay, as she was known to all, loved her family fiercely and took immense pride in preparing an abundance of delicious food to host large family gatherings to celebrate holidays, which often included those without plans. She also hosted numerous birthday parties, bridal showers, and baby showers. She loved to care for others who were sick and was most happy to be in the middle of all the activities of her children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Mama Kay never knew a stranger and would strike a bond with everyone, from employees at her favorite stores to newcomers she would meet while greeting on Sundays at Cross City Church. Prior to her helping with the Cross City church plant, she and Dave were members at the main campus, formerly First Baptist Euless, for over 20 years.
Her vibrant personality shone through her shiny red car, perfect red hair, matching red lipstick, and her impeccable fashion even for her silver-sneakers workout class. She leaves behind a life well-lived and a legacy of serving others with a huge heart for everybody. Mama Kay was a faithful example of how to love deeply and shine brightly like Jesus.
Missing her dearly are her children Jana (Dwayne) Marshall and William (Barbara) Meers; grandchildren Matt (Hanna) Marshall, Mindie (Mark) Elrod, Megan (Kevin) Thompson, Todd Marshall, and Nicolle (Clint) Paschall; great grandchildren Ethan, Katelyn and Griffin Thompson and Solomon Elrod; sister Diane Kile, and many other cherished nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, WB and Evelyn Roberts, husband, David Meers III, son David Meers IV, sister-in-law Norma Ferris, brother-in-law Jerry Kile, niece Carrey Ferris Lacina, and nephew Norman Ferris.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, April 11th at 11:00 am in the chapel at Cross City Church, 1000 W Airport Fwy, Euless, Texas. Visitation with the family will be available prior to the service at 10:30 am.
