Frances Chandler Folkes, age 96, was born October 9, 1922 on Willow Street, Dallas, Texas to Annie Wilkerson Chandler and Forrest E. Chandler. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 11, 2018. Family and personal faith in Jesus Christ were the cornerstones of her life.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1940 as an honor student and assistant editor of the school newspaper.
She married Glenn Houston Folkes on May 3, 1943 in Baltimore, MD as he was stationed there in the Navy. She began a long career in civil service by finding work at military facilities near the many bases where Glenn served during WWII. Her last position was in the Department of Higher Education in Dallas.
As a member of First Baptist Church in Dallas for over 70 years she taught primary age children, served as a Chapel Choir sponsor and was also a member of the Sanctuary Choir.
Within the community, she was a Cub Scout leader, Brownie leader, and school volunteer.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Walnut Place for their care. And, they wish to express particular appreciation to Juana Lira for bringing joy to Frances’s life each day.
She is survived by daughter Kay Peterson, and Sam Peterson; son Houston, and Karen Folkes; sister-in-law Elois Folkes; grandson Sam Peterson, Jr. and wife Janie; granddaughter Elizabeth Zieg and husband Scott; grandson Glenn Folkes III; extended family and a special group of First Baptist friends of more than 70 years. She is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Houston Folkes and great granddaughter, Marian Elizabeth Zieg.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 28, 2018, 1:00 p.m., First Baptist, Dallas, TX, Truett Chapel.
Interment at DFW National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by memorial donations to First Baptist Church Music Ministry or the charity of your choice.
