

G. Paul Leighton, of Bedford, TX, passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at the age of 81. Paul will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all that knew and loved him.
Paul was born on September 23, 1939 at his grandmother’s home in Calumet, OK to George and Pauline Leighton. Paul studied at Notre Dame University and Oklahoma State University earning his business degree and receiving his Air Force ROTC commission in 1961. Paul married his wife of 59 years, Joan Ruscha Leighton, on June 24, 1961. Paul enjoyed a 40-year career in aviation including several years in the Air Force, Texas Air Guard, Braniff International, Piedmont Airlines and US Airways. He was a highly skilled pilot, successful flight instructor and respected colleague in both civil and military operations. He was type-rated as First Officer, or Captain, on multiple aircraft: T-37, T-38, F-102, T-33, L-188, DC-8, B-727, B-747, B-707, B-737, MD-80, FK-28, and FK-100.
Paul was an active member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and served many years as a Eucharistic Minister, Finance Committee, and various other ministries. He also served on the School Board at Holy Family Catholic Church in Irving, TX. Additionally, Paul served as president of his local HOA and several board positions at Braniff International Silver Eagles including editor of the newsletter and president. Paul also enjoyed family time, telling stories, photography, running, cooking and traveling. Once, actually completing a trip around the world, which by the way, was one of his favorite flying stories to tell.
Paul is survived by his wife, Joan Leighton, and his children: Paula Leighton James; Cheryl and Ron Mason; Steve and Michelle Leighton. His grandchildren: Valerie Mason; Michael and Lacey Leighton; Ashlee and Chris Slaughter; Madalyn and Justin Burkhart; Nicole and Justin Newberry; Jeffrey Mason; Riley Mason; Caleb Alderman; Nicholas Leighton and Harrison Leighton. His great grandchildren: Jeremiah Mason; Madilynn Newberry; Ronni Mason; Wyatt Burkhart and his nephew Jeff Ruscha. He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother.
The funeral service will be held at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Bedford. Interment will follow at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Charities.
