On Friday, July 23, 2021, Gehrie Lee Aten, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 90. Gehrie was born on February 13, 1931 in Jackson, Michigan to Arthur and LaVern (Warfield) Aten, and was the oldest of three children. On June 5, 1970, he married the love of his life, Norma (Garcia) Aten, and they raised two children, Robert Aten and Norma (Aten) Cockerham.
Gehrie was a member of the United States Marine Corps and bravely served the United States in the Korean War. Following his service, he opened up a popcorn stand, working various fairs, festivals and events throughout the country, and eventually became the owner of the third largest traveling fair in the country. Gehrie loved to fish, and when he wasn’t working, he could be found spending time on the water, fishing reel in hand. He cherished his family deeply, and loved spending time with them cracking jokes and sharing stories of all his adventures.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, and his mother LaVern. Gehrie is survived by his loving wife, Norma, their two children, Robert and Norma (spouse Alan), his four grandchildren, Ashley Aten (spouse Taylor), Jordan Aten (spouse Kimberly), Elia Cockerham and Sierra Cockerham, his two great-grandchildren, Beckett Sebesta and Nelly Sebesta, his two sisters, Pat Williams (spouse Bruce) and Sally Arcaro (spouse Frank), and many more family members who will miss him dearly.
A visitation will be held on August 3, 2021 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home in Colleyville, Texas. A funeral mass will be held on August 4, 2021 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Catholic Community Church, 1000 Tinker Road, Colleyville, Texas, followed by a graveside service at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas. A reception at the church will follow the graveside service.
