Ida DeRito Kirkland, 93, of Hurst, Texas went to be with our Lord on Wednesday October 18, 2017 after a brief illness. Ida was born on October 14, 1924 in Bagnoli Del Trigno, Italy to Giovanni and Fedela Palotto DeRito. In 1930 at the age of 5, and with several members of her family, she stepped onto the deck of the Conte Biancamano bound for the United States of America. Upon landing she passed through Ellis Island where they Americanized her by changing her name from Aida to Ida. She became an American citizen under her parents when they received their citizenship. Her family settled in Richwood, West Virginia where she was raised and educated. She worked in a sawmill and was later working at the hospital when she met Troy Kirkland, a Texan in Richwood working with his brother. They married on May 21, 1951. They moved to Texas and in 1953 settled in Hurst. She was a homemaker with unconditional love for her family. She enjoyed shopping, card games, marbles and dominoes, but mostly she enjoyed taking care of others. If you came in her home there was always food laid out for you and lots of sweet tea. You had to eat whether you were hungry or not. No one ever left her home hungry. If she was making spaghetti and meatballs or homemade bread there was sure to be a crowd. She was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church for many years. Ida's compassion, love and laughter will be missed by all that knew her, especially her family. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Troy Kirkland, a daughter Victoria Wiggins and grandson Matthew Wiggins, daughter-in-law Debbie Kirkland, her parents, four brothers Alfonse DeRito, Fred DeRito, Pete DeRito, and Vit DeRito, and three sisters Giovina D'Onofrio, Rose Palotto, and Annette Mazzella. Survived by her son Richard Kirkland and wife Patti of Haslett, Texas, daughter Kathleen Palmer and husband Randy of Hurst, Texas. Grandchildren Kristie Mangrum and husband Jaye of Bedford, Texas, Rachel Kirkland of Bedford, Texas, Sarah Huebner and husband Chad of Bedford, Texas, Lindsay Palmer of Bedford, Texas, Randall (Bo) Palmer and wife Becky of Boaz, Alabama and Christopher Shell of Ft. Worth, Texas.
