Jan was preceded in death by her father, Edward Scheffler and her mother, Jan Scheffler of La Pine, OR.
Jan served in the US Army during 1962 -1964 as a dental assistant and in the public relations department. She rode in a convertible for many parades waving to the crowds and representing the US Army. Jan had an older brother Gene Scheffler, now deceased, who served in the Air Force, and a younger brother, Bill Scheffler who served in the US Army in Vietnam. Bill and his wife Jeanne reside in Castle Rock, WA as well as their daughter Lindsey and her husband Jeston, and their two boys Reese and Hunter.
Jan and Rich were married 53 years and lived in Centralia, WA (1967); Seattle, WA (1967-1969); West St Paul, MN (1969-1971); Maplewood, MN (1971-1984); and North Richland Hills, TX (1984 -2021). Their first date was an airplane ride in Cessna 172 piloted by Rich and Jan liked the ride and had many more in the coming weeks.
Son Dean was born on February 16, 1969 in Seattle, WA and was two and a half months old when moving to West St Paul, MN. Dean and his wife Lena reside in Blue Mound, TX where Dean served six years on the town council. They have three sons, Michael, Daniel and David.
Daughter Cara and her husband Steve live in Hobbs, NM along with their daughter Jay and her husband David Garcia. Steve's mother Joyce lives in the historical Cobb Home in Seminole, TX.
Jan liked to watch the American Flag flying on our home on special days. Another one of her favorite activities every Saturday was to get her hair done at a local beauty salon, then go shopping at J C Penney or Kohls, and later go out to dinner at Cheddars in Bedford. About half the time Rich would also buy her some flowers and she was all set.
For vacations, in Minnesota Jan really liked the Grand Marias area and staying in the Ojibwa Native American tribe motel in that area. It was cool up there on the North Shore (of Lake Superior) up near the Canadian border. In Texas, her favorites were the beach at Galveston, TX and in the mountains of Colorado to cool off from the hot Texas sun. Between 1985 and 2003 when she became bound to the wheelchair, we visited many places throughout the mountainous area of Colorado west of Denver. Jan's favorite place to stay was Aspen but we saw most all of the destinations of interest west of Denver.
Jan also loved Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners with family and her dinners were excellent. Our favorite desert was strawberry desert and strawberry pie which Jan was very proud of and which disappeared quickly. Jan also liked Chinese food.
And, Jan had a smile that could light up your day. Jan, you lit up our lives.
